Are headaches, earaches, dizziness, and pain in your neck and shoulders a regular part of your life? These are all symptoms of a serious neuromuscular condition known as TMD. TMD stands for temporomandibular joint dysfunction. Our bodies have two of these joints, and they’re located just in front of our ears, where the upper and lower jaws connect. When they’re working properly, these joints are what make it possible for us to open and close our mouths smoothly.

Unfortunately, they don’t always work properly. Stress or a misaligned bite can cause these joints to dysfunction. This, in turn, can cause their nerve endings to become inflamed and result in the mild to severe symptoms that patients with TMD experience on a routine basis.

How Is TMD Treated

Because TMD is often caused by a misaligned bite, the most common treatment solution is an oral appliance that alters or corrects the patient’s bite. Because of our commitment to personalized care, any appliance that our Boerne office provides you with will be custom-made, according to your specific needs. When your appliance is ready, you’ll be instructed how to wear and maintain it every day to ensure that your jaw is properly aligned.

In some cases, treatment with traditional orthodontics may be recommended instead. Traditional braces use metal brackets and wires to gradually move teeth into their ideal position. Treatment times will vary for each patient, but the result will be a straighter and healthier smile.
