Good Dental Hygiene Begins Early

Dr. Kurt Mackie agrees with the American Dental Association’s recommendation that children should have their first visit to the dentist by the time their first tooth erupts, with six month visits beginning no later than age one. It may seem a little early, but this first visit is about more than checking for decay and infection. It’s also an excellent time to introduce your little one to the dental office. Beginning these six month visits as soon as possible shows your child there is nothing to fear from good preventive dental care.

These initial visits to Dr. Mackie’s office also give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have regarding your little one’s oral health and hygiene. It can help to prepare a list of questions to ask before you visit the office, so you don’t leave with any doubts. Some common topics of discussion include…

  • How often should I be cleaning my baby’s teeth and gums?
  • How often should I be cleaning my baby’s teeth and gums?
  • Should I use toothpaste to clean her first teeth? What kind?
  • Concerns about baby bottle tooth decay
  • Questions regarding fluoride exposure
  • Potential orthodontic concerns

We know some children may be a little unsure their first few times visiting the dentist, and that’s why we take a special approach with our littlest patients. Our warm, friendly staff will make sure your child feels totally at ease visiting Dr. Mackie for regular preventive care.

Older Kids Benefit From Extra Prevention

Once your child is able to tie her shoes (around age six), she should be ready to brush her own teeth, too. This age is also the beginning of the most cavity-prone years — ages six to 14. To help keep cavities at bay, your child’s dentist is prepared with extra preventive measures, including dental sealants and fluoride treatments.

Dental sealants are thin, translucent shields that are applied directly onto the surface of the molars. These back teeth are covered with pits and fissures that make it easier to chew up our food — but their moon-like surface also makes the molars a prime location for cavities. Sealants cover the nooks and crannies to shield the tooth enamel from the food particles and bacteria that cause decay. A quick, painless treatment, dental sealants provide years of protection against cavities.

The mineral fluoride is well-known for its ability to strengthen tooth enamel. While children may receive exposure to fluoride in tap water and fortified toothpastes, a quick treatment following their checkup and cleaning is beneficial in providing extra protection against decay.
