Dental Crowns

If you have a decayed or fractured tooth or a tooth that has undergone root canal therapy, Dr. Mackie can restore its strength and appearance with a custom-made dental crown. Our office offers three crown options:

  • Ceramic crowns with a gold base
  • All ceramic crowns
  • CEREC same-day crown technology to craft fully-customized ceramic crowns in about two hours.

The traditional crown process takes at least two visits to complete. The first step is for Dr. Mackie to prepare your tooth and take impressions. Once the tooth is readied by reshaping the walls and biting surface, Dr. Mackie uses dental putty to make an impression of the tooth that will be used by our skilled ceramists to craft your custom dental crown.

Next, we will use a tray filled with similar putty to create an impression of your entire bite. This impression will assist the ceramist in our lab by ensuring the crown fits into the size and shape of your occlusion.

The final preparatory step is to match the shade of your teeth so the crown blends seamlessly into your smile. At this point, a temporary crown is worn while our trusted dental lab creates your permanent restoration.

Once your crown is prepared, you’ll return to have the temporary removed and the permanent crown placed. The results look and feel natural, and with proper care, patients are able to keep their replacement teeth for years.

Root Canals

Dr. Mackie provides conservative dentistry. That means we encourage patients to choose restorative treatment that preserves dental structure whenever possible. An infected tooth is extremely painful and root canals have gotten a reputation for being just as excruciating. The only alternative treatment is extraction and tooth replacement which damages dentition, can take numerous visits, and is often, quite painful. Advances in dentistry make root canal therapy a comfortable, conservative restoration option, and saving the natural tooth is always the preferred choice.

During your root canal treatment, our Boerne team removes the nerve and pulp from the center of your tooth using varying sized files and disinfecting solution. Once the infection has been removed, the inner tooth canals are filled with gutta percha, a safe, biocompatible substance. We’ll complete your procedure by capping the tooth with a protective crown to improve both your tooth’s strength and appearance. While some root canal treatments require multiple visits to fully restore your smile, patients will undoubtedly experience relief as soon as the infection is removed.

Bridges

A dental bridge, also known as a fixed bridge, is a restorative dental treatment designed to help patients fill a gap in their smile. Replacing one or two consecutive missing teeth is simple with a porcelain bridge. Regardless of what caused your tooth loss, replacement is essential to maintain optimal oral health and proper tooth alignment.

In order to replace missing teeth with a dental bridge, crowns will need to be placed on two healthy, “pillar” teeth on either side of the empty socket. These crowns are created the same way traditional crowns are, but the placement is different since these teeth will support a “bridge” tooth that fills the gap left by the missing tooth. This is why the procedure is often referred to as crown and bridge. The crowns and bridge tooth are affixed as a single prosthetic unit using strong, permanent cement. Once the replacement teeth are bonded, your smile looks and feels naturally beautiful. Maintaining oral health with a dental bridge requires the use of floss threaders to clean below the bridge, and our team will provide an explanation and demonstration to help you get started.

Treatment time will vary for each patient, but when your bridge is complete, you can look forward to not only improved appearance, but improved functionality. Imagine smiling with confidence again and enjoying a more balanced and nutritious diet. With a dental bridge from Dr. Mackie, you can do more than you can imagine.

Third Molar Extraction

At our office, we recommend that patients have their wisdom teeth removed to preserve the health and beauty of their smile. Our modern jaws can’t accommodate these late-developing teeth, so allowing them to emerge can lead to crowding. When crowding occurs, existing teeth are pushed out of alignment, creating serious oral health complications. Your wisdom teeth can also become stuck under the gum line, resulting in a painful condition known as impaction. Having your wisdom teeth removed will prevent both conditions.
